About Harpie
I wish I could say I fondly remember those times in the kitchen with Mom, when she would impart handed-down culinary techniques and, like a steel trap, I would take it all in and make it part of my being. Instead, I remember Mom’s graying hair as her eldest daughter flat out refused to pay any attention to even the simplest recipe. I learned to boil water before adding noodles so they didn’t disintegrate, but I still need to call her for proper instruction every time I want to hard boil an egg.
Admissions aside, I did discover in my late teens that I’m simply mad for making desserts. Every winter, friends and family can sense when the fever is taking over. They await anxiously to see what goodies I’ll produce, baking staples and newfound adventures alike. I’ll sprinkle little treat excursions throughout the rest of the seasons as well, just to keep myself sane.
About Harpie’s Goodie Basket
When I’m not plotting gastronomical dominion, I wile away hours as an underemployed editor. (And yes, this is probably about two-thirds of my day.) To keep myself busy, as well as employable, I started taking coding classes. About half way through my first course, I realized combining my baking hobby and my obsession with all things in their proper format seemed bloody brilliant. Plus, I’d always wanted to have a platform to share my various recipes with my culinary “guinea pigs” without having to constantly fish around through stacks of printouts, dog-eared books and hastily scribbled notes. Seriously. My recipe collection was getting unwieldy.
Thus, in about May 2010, the grand Harpie’s Goodie Basket project was born. The more code I picked up, the more it evolved, and the official online launch took place in January 2011. Version 2.0, a little cleaner and with a couple of extra XHTML bells and whistles, launched in March 2011.
After laying dormant for nearly five years while I contracted on a little site called Windows.com, Harpie’s Goodie Basket has once again come to life. A lot has changed in the web design world since I’ve been away, not the least of which is mobile takeover. After many design courses to get up to speed, this latest incarnation includes all kinds of HTML5 and CSS3 goodness, as well as a much-overdue responsive design.
And since I’m a lifelong learner—never fully satisfied with any project—believe you me, this is only the beginning.
